After over a year with a large yard of dirt and weeds, the whole family was thrilled to finally see it come together this summer. In May the sprinklers went in, workers came out three times to kill our very resilient weeds, and then they spread out some topsoil. Sebastian was glued to the window to watch it all happen, especially if there were tractors involved!
Meanwhile Jeff set to work building some steps along the side of our house from the back of the driveway, down the slope to the backyard. Since our real garden won't be done this year, we put in some little garden areas alongside the steps. This brick wall is south-facing, so this is the warmest spot in our yard.
We put my little rose bush at the bottom. It grows roses that smell absolutely divine!
Then came the day in mid-June when they brought all the sod to lay. There were about 8 men doing the job and they could each take a roll of sod and toss it down so that it unrolled almost perfectly in place. It was very fun to watch! Sebastian was thrilled with all the action, and I think the forklift driver enjoyed being waved to every time he drove by.
We all had to wait 2 weeks before we could walk on it, so the roots could grow in some. It was very hard to be patient! When the day came we turned on the sprinklers and let the kids run and play. It was so wonderful! It is amazing what you take for granted till you go without, isn't it?
Later in the summer, once we were back from our trip to Utah, Jeff finished up the steps and we found good deals on craigslist for a riding lawn mower and play equipment for the kids.
"Tractor" rides are very popular around here right now with all the kids, and Emma can't wait to take over mowing the lawn!
