Pioneer Day

July 24th is a state holiday in Utah. It is Pioneer Day--the day the first of the Mormon pioneers entered the Utah valley and found their new home away from persecution. A number of our ancestors come from this hardy stock, and so I was grateful that our church primary leaders put together a pioneer activity for the children.

Here's a pic of my tough pioneer children ready to go have some fun. Maya is wearing a pioneer dress my mother made for me when I was a young girl.They did relay races where they had to load their "wagon," set up camp, and then unload and come back.
They also played traditional pioneer games, sang pioneer songs, listened to pioneer stories, and at the end they received a little knapsack containing beef jerky, a mini-muffin, a clementine, taffy and a no-bake cookie.
