A Wedding and a Holiday

The reason Jeff's parents came out was so Jeff and I could leave for a week to go to my brother's wedding in Portland and then have a few days on the Oregon coast to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We are so grateful to them for being willing to watch all our little munchkins while we were away!

My brother, Joe, married a girl whose parents immigrated from Scotland. She is absolutely wonderful and just what my big brother needs! :) The wedding was beautiful, the bride was gorgeous, my brother even danced(!!!), and there were Scottish bagpipers and wedding guests from Scotland in kilts! We had a wonderful time and my entire family was able to be there--which NEVER happens. After the wedding we headed to Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast. My Mom and Stepfather had the same idea, so we got to spend a day having them all to ourselves! We thoroughly enjoyed sleeping with the fireplace on and the windows cracked open to listen to the waves crashing. We spent most of our time relaxing, reading (real books with pages to turn!), taking naps (only parents will fully appreciate this luxury), and watching the ocean. We did venture a few miles up and down the coast to explore the temperate rain forest, complete with gigantic trees, ferns, vibrant green moss, hidden waterfalls and dramatic vistas of the ocean.
At the end of this gorgeous walk was a beautiful ocean cove, and at the far end of the cove is this gorgeous waterfall. This ocean vista was from Ecola State Park.
We hiked down to Crescent Beach and found over 12 perfect sand dollars washed ashore!
The little downtown area of Cannon Beach had fun shops, art galleries and restaurants with fabulous seafood. We also found a little crepe cafe where we had lunch a couple times. Chicken, pesto, fresh spinach and cheese was a favorite crepe, as well as strawberries, nutella and whip cream!

The large rock here is called "Haystack Rock," and it is the 5th largest monolith in the world. On our last night on the coast, the tide was out so far that Haystack Rock was no longer in the ocean, as well as all the sea life that is usually submerged at the base of it.
Our last sunset on the coast...
...for now. :)
